Features

From the time of its inception in 1960, Grand Seiko has pursued the pinnacle of wristwatches. This unwavering spirit is embodied in its brand symbol, the lion, which is the inspiration behind this jewelry watch, a limited-edition of eight. The theme of this model is the “red lion,” capturing the passion and majesty of this inspirational creature. The watch is set with over 250 diamonds, between its beautiful 18k rose gold case and its dial, where they join brilliantly shining garnets, stones that represent the passion that transforms effort into success. At the watch’s heart is the Spring Drive 8 Days Caliber 9R01, crafted at the Micro Artist Studio, located within Seiko Epson’s Shiojiri facility, where master watchmakers and artisans unite to create the finest Spring Drive movements. Born from the harmony of Grand Seiko’s philosophy of watchmaking and the inquisitive spirit of the Micro Artist Studio, the movement employs a mechanism with three barrels arranged in a series to achieve an extended eight-day power reserve. This ensures that the watch maintains the high accuracy that is Spring Drive’s hallmark over a long period of time. The exterior of the movement receives its beautiful finishing at the hands of the expert artisans of the Micro Artist Studio.

A gem-set dial made for precision

The heart of the dial is created in beautiful wine-red mother-of-pearl. A circular base of 18k white gold receives colorful accents achieved through the use of diamonds and Mozambique garnets, the latter of which exude a deep, warm red color. Taper-cut diamonds and garnets are set in rails along the arc of the dial and reflect a shining light that seems to flow across the form of the watch, lending a sense of presence to the timepiece as a whole. The shape, quality, and color of these precious stones speak to the skills of the craftspeople involved, one of whom was responsible for carefully checking these characteristics. Three garnets indicate the 12 o’clock position, while at the three, six, and nine o’clock positions, stones slightly wider than those in other positions make it easy to read the time. This jewelry watch is an excellent example of the combination of unique design and legibility that is a hallmark of Grand Seiko.

A powerful design that conveys the sheen of a lion’s razor-sharp claws

The lion emblem, displayed on the case back of the first Grand Seiko watch, has been the brand’s symbol since its earliest days. Embodying strength, dignity, and a regal presence, the lion conveys the brand’s deeply held intentions and aspiration to create the pinnacle of wristwatches. This creation takes inspiration from the Grand Seiko lion emblem, using its nobility and strength to inform its own characteristic design. Diamonds are set on the lugs, which extend outward to represent the lion’s shining, sharpened claws.

Special strap included

An additional strap made by KYOTO Leather*1 is included. It has been treated with a special stamping technique to create an effect reminiscent of a lion’s mane. These straps are truly unique, created through a technique that results in an appearance for each strap that is not exactly like any other.

*1: KYOTO Leather
KYOTO Leather fuses the traditional craftsmanship of kimono – such as Nishijin weaving and gold leaf techniques from Kyoto, an ancient capital of Japan – with tanners from Himeji, one of Japan’s leading leather-producing regions, to create a distinctly Japanese leather that is unparalleled in the world.

Caliber 9R01

This Spring Drive movement was developed by the Micro Artist Studio exclusively for Grand Seiko. Drawing on three barrels, it achieves a power reserve of approximately eight days (192 hours). To maximize this long power reserve, a unique time-adjustment mechanism can be used without stopping the hands. To ensure the beautiful appearance of the dial, the power reserve indicator is located on the bridge, which can be viewed through the case back.
