A dial depicting wind-blown snow
One of the beautiful sights a person might witness on a harsh mountainside in winter is that of patterns etched into windswept snow, created as strong gales shape the snow that has landed on hard surfaces. The peaks of the Hotaka mountains, which can be seen from the Shinshu Watch Studio where Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive and quartz watches are made, are covered in snow for several months each year. The snowy surfaces of this region in wintertime have been re-created with this highly realistic and evocative dial pattern. The result of master craftsmanship, the dial is made not by a simple white coating, but rather a special kind of processing that uses silver plating to endow it with a refined expressiveness. Framed with 44 diamonds, the dial achieves its appearance of pure white without the use of any white materials or pigments.
