As soon as caliber 9S was released, its significance was recognized by Grand Seiko fans and watch experts alike. They saw that, while it inherited all the traditional qualities of Grand Seiko, it was an innovative and highly advanced caliber. The designers had achieved their aim; 9S embodied both the tradition and innovation for which Grand Seiko had always stood. It was the perfect evolution of a classic.

The introduction of 9S55 in 1998 was just the beginning. On this platform several other Grand Seiko calibers have been introduced, including a GMT version in 2002 and the hi-beat caliber, 9S85 in 2009. The base caliber, 9S5 series, was upgraded with three-day power reserve in 2010 to the 9S6 series. The hi-beat GMT which was introduced in 2014 won an award for Grand Seiko at the 2014 Grand Prix de Geneve.
