Grand Seiko will exhibit for the first time at Central Embassy Bangkok Thailand, the global forum for design and premier venue for collecting, exhibiting, discussing and creating collectible design. The exhibition will showcase an installation featuring Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive movement, the company’s unique and innovative mechanism characterized by high precision. Two Japanese artists have brought the revolutionary idea of Spring Drive to life in an installation that dramatizes “THE FLOW OF TIME”. |
THE FLOW OF TIME
As the embodiment of Japanese aesthetics and master artisanal techniques, Spring Drive is praised for its unique signature of the perfect glide motion second hand, reflecting the natural and continuous flow of time. Two Japanese artists have teamed up to express the essence of Spring Drive in an installation that invites guests to experience and explore the innovation that Spring Drive represents.
What Is Spring Drive?
Spring Drive is a technology unique to Grand Seiko that combines the power derived from a mainspring with the high accuracy of a quartz crystal, making it possible to deliver the one-second-a-day precision that no other mechanical watches can achieve.
Contents Of The Exhibition
This installation is intended to show the world the view of Spring Drive, which encapsulates the flow and transience of time.
Featured at Milan Design Week, this exhibition secured a top spot in terms of brand reputation, not only from general visitors, but also from media and design professionals, Approach to TIME.
It was awarded the DSA Japan Space Design Award 2018 Gold Award and SDA Award (52nd Japan Sign Design Award) Silver Award.

TAKT PROJECT
Returning to Design Miami/, TAKT PROJECT was a 2017 Designer of the Future winner. Seven acrylic objects in different shapes are shown in the space, with parts of the Spring Drive watch movement inside. Looking into the objects, small twinkling parts and framed scenery are merged together, so viewers can feel the watch movement as it approaches the essence of time. Small lights in the transparent objects imply the existence of small electricity generated by the parts themselves in silence.

TAKT PROJECTDesign Studio
Established in 2013, with Satoshi Yoshiizumi as representative, under the motto “DESIGN THINK + DO TANK,” the studio has undertaken various projects seeking to “create other possibilities” through design. It has conducted experimental independent research projects and presented the results at the Milan Design Week, DesignMiami/, Maison & Object Paris, Hong Kong M+, and other home and international art museums and design events. It collaborates with various clients, taking a unique approach which maximizes the role of design in projects based on its research findings.

Shingo Abe
The trail of the sun draws an arch in the sky; the history of timepieces began by “ticking” this natural arching “movement” which has always been continuous. Time has since transformed from what used to “flow” into something that “ticks.” In the pursuit for better performance, watches have come to demonstrate a higher-precision with the “ticking” of time.
The Spring Drive movement is incomparable with a second hand so unique with a smooth glide motion. The technology makes you feel the “flowing” of time, just like a falling raindrop, leaves falling to the ground and stars orbiting in the night sky.
This visual work visually showcases the contrast between the “ticking time” and “flowing time”.

Shingo AbeCG Director/Designer
Born in 1981, Abe studied media arts at Tohoku University of Art and Design. After graduating, he joined the visual design studio WOW and was involved in advertising as a computer graphics designer, animator and director. Thereafter, he has collaborated with many artists not only in video but also in various media including spatial presentation using image projection, interactive works, and installations, as well as film direction for fashion shows and stage presentations.
