This modern reinterpretation of the 62GS, Grand Seiko’s first automatic watch, depicts a beautiful moment in the ever-changing seasons in Japan. In a first for a 62GS that is not a limited edition, 18k rose gold has been used to craft the case. The warm pink patterned dial shines with a brilliance that enhances the watch’s beauty, representing a scene in which snow has covered the cherry blossoms, known as sakura-kakushi. With the warmth of the rose gold case and the shimmering of the dial, it is easy to imagine the snow-covered cherry blossoms glistening in the bright morning sun of early spring. The brown leather strap, which is symbolic of a tree trunk, adds to an atmosphere of beautiful calm. A case design that modernizes the 62GS, a milestone in Grand Seiko’s history
The 62GS was introduced in 1967. Its most distinctive design feature is almost certainly its bezel-less structure, in which the glass is directly fixed to the case body. This reduces the visual thickness of the watch while allowing light to enter the dial from multiple angles. This model inherits the bezel-less structure and other design elements of the original 62GS from 1967, while refining aspects such as wearability and crown operability to achieve a more contemporary design.
Expressing cherry blossoms concealed by snow at the dawn of spring
The dial depicts a scene in which cherry blossoms are concealed by fallen snow, a rare phenomenon known as sakura-kakushi. This beautiful sight can be experienced in early spring in the Tohoku region of northern Japan, which includes Iwate Prefecture, home of the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi. The stunning dial captures spring’s early days and changes its appearance depending on the angle and play of light. It transforms the seemingly simple act of checking the time into a captivating event for the eyes.
