The Grand Seiko aim is simple; to be the ‘best basic’ watch in the world. The new hi beat caliber 36000 is Grand Seiko’s first hi-beat caliber in 41 years. It takes time to achieve perfection.

Caliber 9S85 the work of the true manufacturer

A high beat caliber is more resistant to shock and therefore can maintain high accuracy. This theory is easy to understand but difficult to materialize. For sufficient power reserve, the caliber requires strong torque and a very durable structure to sustain it. The materials, design and processes involved in each component in Grand Seiko have been developed through 50 years of continuous research and development.

Mainspring

Mainspring
The mainspring is the driving force of a mechanical watch and SEIKO is one of a small handful of watchmakers to make its own springs, with its own alloys, in-house, and has been doing so for over 50 years. For the new hi-beat caliber, SEIKO has developed a new material for the mainspring. The 10-beat caliber delivers much higher torque, (50% higher, in fact than that of an 8-beat movement) and the new mainspring achieves a 55-hour power reserve.

Balance spring

If the mainspring is the driving force, the balance spring is the beating heart of a mechanical watch. As with mainsprings, SEIKO has been producing its own balance springs for more than 50 years. SEIKO has spent five years developing a new material for the new balance spring. The result is a balance spring that is more resistant against shock and magnetic power, and therefore provides more stable accuracy.

Durability

Durability
Accuracy without durability is meaningless, and to combine both without compromising either is the summit of Grand Seiko's Hi-beat caliber's achievement. A frequency of 10 beats per second imposes, of course, stronger stress on the mechanism and reliability over time is therefore the challenge. The durability of each Grand Seiko 9S caliber is achieved by the completely new design of the escape wheel and pallet, made by MEMS, to ensure the perfect smoothness of the surfaces, reduced weight and improved lubrication sustainability.

Grand Seiko introduced its first high beat models like 61GS (automatic), 45GS (manual winding) and 19GS (ladies') during the 1960's, and they were quickly recognised as being among the very best in the world. Now, 41 years later, new advances in materials, computer-aided design and manufacturing have made possible a completely new 10-beat caliber, 9S85.
