The features of Spring Drive

As its name implies, SEIKO Spring Drive derives its power from a mainspring, just like all other luxury mechanical watches. The Spring Drive difference is in the regulator. Spring Drive is a traditional mechanical watch in which the most delicate and vulnerable part, the escapement, has been replaced by an entirely new type of regulator that delivers the same high level of precision as an electronic watch, and is therefore 10 times more accurate than any other luxury mechanical watch. Spring Drive is the perfect synthesis of traditional mechanical watchmaking and electronic precision.

The Development of Spring Drive

In 1977, a young watch engineer, Yoshikazu Akahane, dreamed of making what he called the "perfect watch". It would combine the beauty of the mechanical watch, driven by a mainspring, with the precision of electronic timekeeping. In 2005, over 600 prototypes and 230 patents later, Akahane's dream was realized in the first Spring Drive watch.
