With the exception of the arrival of the very first Grand Seiko watch in 1960, perhaps the most important moment in the history of Grand Seiko was the creation of the 9S mechanical calibre in 1998.
The 9S calibre was entirely new and designed from scratch to deliver the high precision and excellent durability for which Grand Seiko was renowned.
The 9S calibre has continued to evolve over the years. This evolution includes the use of new SPRON alloys for the main and balance springs, and the application of MEMS engineering, a technique that allows key components to be manufactured to tolerances as small as one thousandth of a millimeter. Today, 9S is the platform upon which the entire Grand Seiko suite of mechanical calibres is built. Thanks to its high precision, long power reserve and robust construction, 9S has earned a deserved reputation as one of the world’s finest automatic movements.
