1998 saw the release of a new generation of Grand Seiko mechanical calibers. Designed and manufactured entirely in-house, the first 9S series calibers were so innovative in design and functionality that they allowed the creation of a new and higher Grand Seiko Standard and provided a platform on which, over the past 25 years, a whole new series of high-precision mechanical calibers has been built.
